FUZZTONE TECHNIQUES. Well, I used to use a Big Muff (original one) to get Santana like Sustain at the very low volumes required in L.A. clubs and bars - long before any modern amps were available.
Now, the Fuzztone is an almost essential tool in any pedal collection. The particular "artifical" tone is often exactly what you need for the sound at hand.
Use it with a chorus, flanger, or phaser AFTER the Fuzz, or with a compressor BEFORE the fuzz to recreate Jimi's sounds, and work towards creating your own.
An OLD Fuzztone technique. Turn the tone control on the guitar all the way DOWN and the Fuzztone goes into a totally different character - really singing sustain without the top end characteristic of fuzztones.
Apply the fuzz in new applications - to imitate a saxaphone, to double the bass player's line, to make chords in a slow song seem like a Hammond Organ. In general, take advantage of the "artifical" sound and huge sustain to search out new applications of the guitar in your music.
